Her name was Teresa. (Actually: ‘Terezka’).

The famous picture was taken in 1948, at a children's home In Warsaw.

The Photographer was David Seymour.

Here’s another picture that was taken at the same time.

Terezka’s experiences whilst growing up in a concentration camp had such an effect on her that the scribbles she’s drawn are her depiction of ‘home’.

It isn’t known what concentration camp she grew up in, it’s assumed it was Auschwitz.

It isn’t even known if she was Polish, a Christian or of the Jewish faith, The latter is assumed, but some argue that Terezka is a Slavic name.

Sadly, that is pretty much the extent of any knowledge about her.

This little girl seems to have disappeared into history.

The second picture doesn’t show quite the same look of horror.

(I wonder whether she is left or right handed? One of the photos is flipped left to right).

I hope she was able to recover and that she went on to have a long, fulfilling life. (She’d be in her mid-70′s by now).

But, we just don’t know.

Since I originally wrote this answer in 2016, more information has come to light. Sadly, it confirms that Terezka (actually Teresa) didn’t live the long, fulfilling life I ’d hoped.

Teresa Adwentowska came from a Catholic family. She was one of two daughters of Jan Klemens, an activist in the Polish Resistance.

During the bombing of Warsaw, Tereska was struck by a piece of shrapnel that left her brain-damaged. Her physical and mental condition steadily deteriorated. During 1954, she had to be sent to a mental hospital. In 1978, at the Tworki Mental Asylum, Teresa met with a tragic death when she accidentally choked on a piece of sausage. She would have been around 40 years of age when she died.
